RARE CAMERAS & PHOTOGRAPHY
Lot 15:
Four daguerreotype, ambrotype, & tintype photos in frames, circa 19th century. Made on glass using the wet-plate collodion process, ambrotypes were the first positive images created using this process. They were often sold in cases or ornate frames. Made on thin iron sheets coated with a black enamel, tintypes were a variation of the ambrotype. They were inexpensive, easy to make, and durable. Tintypes were often used by street photographers at fairs and parks. Daguerreotype was the first publicly available photographic process, widely used during the 1840s and 1850s. “Daguerreotype” also refers to an image created through this process.
